    • Linear polyethers having a recurrent unit [Ar-O-R-O], where Ar is an arylene group and R is a divalent linkage group, are made by reacting substantially equimolecular proportions of a dihydric phenol and a disulphonic ester of a diol in presence of an alkali the molecular proportion of which is at least twice the molecular proportion of the disulphonic ester. Specified dihydric phenols are resorcinol, hydroquinone and 3,31- or 4, 41-dihydroxydiphenyl. Specified disulphonic esters are the di-paratoluene sulphonates of ethylene glycol; 1 : 4-bis - (beta - hydroxyethoxy) - benzene; propane - 1,3 - diol; butane - 1,4 - diol; pentane-1,5 - diol; hexane - 1,6 - diol; decane - 1,10-diol; and diethylene glycol. Reaction may be performed in presence of a mixture of dioxane and water. The polymers may be purified by washing with boiling water and boiling hydrochloric acid. They are soluble in meta-cresol and nitrobenzene. Examples are given. Specification 433,452 is referred to.
